Independent Arabia: Haftar promoted his sons as part of his efforts to maintain his influence in the eastern region
A British newspaper confirmed that American Khalifa Haftar’s promotion of a number of his sons to high military ranks and important positions sparked controversy in eastern and western Libya alike.
The newspaper “Independent Arabia” explained, in its report, that the level of fears of growing military control in eastern Libya has increased, especially after the Charge d’Affaires of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Stephanie Khoury, in her first briefing before the UN Security Council last Wednesday, sent a message to the authorities in the east of the country. .
The report explained that Khoury called for allowing electoral centers to be opened to conduct municipal elections, as 10 out of 12 municipal election centers were prevented, calling on them to cooperate with the Election Commission.
The newspaper criticized the American Haftar’s assigning his sons to military ranks that require a progression in the military ladder, as Haftar appointed his youngest son, Saddam, as head of his ground forces controlling the east and south, while granting his son Khaled the position of head of the security units with broad powers.
Regarding the rise of the sons of the American Haftar in the military ranks, the newspaper indicated that it comes within the framework of his effort to maintain his influence in the eastern and southern region, as he has become threatened due to his agencies carrying out kidnappings, forced disappearances, arbitrary arrests, and extrajudicial killings.
