Electoral Commission: We have not received any funding from the Dabaiba government yet to support the elections

Member of the High National Elections Commission, Abdul Hakim Balkhair, confirmed that all the stages we went through during the municipal council elections went smoothly as planned.

Balkhair indicated, in statements to the “Fawasel” platform, that we have now reached the final stage of voter registration, and we are only waiting for the end of the legal period for appeals so that we can publish the final lists and enter the stage of distributing cards, and opening the door for candidacy to candidates in the municipalities.

He continued that we have not received any funding from the Dabaiba government so far to support the elections and we are still waiting, indicating that after opening the door for candidacy and publishing the final lists of candidates, we will announce the dates of the election campaign and the date of voting.

He advised that setting a timetable for the electoral process is done in stable countries where electoral administrations receive their budget from the beginning of the year and have all the necessary preparations and training.

He concluded by saying, “Libya is not stable now, so we determine the time for each stage separately, because it needs electoral security, so we cannot set prior timetables and we face major challenges.”
