CNN: The United States is planning to reopen its embassy in Libya for fear that Russia will find a foothold in the country

CNN confirmed that the United States wants to reopen its embassy in Libya, after a decade of suspending its operations there, for fear that Russia will find an influential foothold in the country.

The network indicated, in its report, that the US State Department submitted a request, in its financial budget for the year 2025, to allocate $12.7 million, to enable the embassy to resume its operations in Libya, in order to provide operational expenses for the travel operations facility and planned diplomatic support for the work of the embassy.

The report added that the Foreign Ministry also requested an increase in the allocations granted to it to use aircraft stationed in Malta for flights to Tripoli.

It explained that the US State Department says in the new budget request that “with Russia’s increasing influence on the southern wing of NATO, the American presence with flights to Libya is vital to preserving our security interests in the long term.”

The report continued that the United States is currently conducting active negotiations regarding the selection of a temporary facility that will provide security support and appropriate personnel in the capital, Tripoli.
