The people of Shahat are demanding pressure to hold elections in 2024 and withdraw the decision to impose a tax on the exchange rate
The gathering of activists from the city of Shahat called for the necessity of pressuring everyone involved in the electoral process to hold presidential and parliamentary elections during the year 2024, considering it the only solution to end the Libyan crisis.
The people of Shahat explained in a statement that the political and institutional division that Libya has led to and the deterioration of living conditions have produced an absurd reality in which the will of the people was robbed, their blood was shed, and their wealth was plundered, pointing out that all political and social elites in the country and the UN mission must strive to contribute to realizing the people’s aspirations by restoring sovereignty. Patriotism and missing the opportunity for everyone who dares to neglect the democratic process.
They added, saying: “The will of more than 2.8 million Libyans and their right to self-determination through the ballot boxes must be respected, and a final date for holding elections must be set no later than the current year 2024. The struggle over legitimacy must be ended and a single government must be formed to address the state of division and replace all current bodies, and its primary mission is to conduct Presidential and parliamentary elections during 2024, and this government must adhere to its basic mission according to a specific, non-amendable timetable.”
They also called for the necessity of accelerating the reunification of the military institution and addressing the issue of rampant weapons in accordance with the outcomes of the “5+5” committee. There is no Libyan sovereignty without a unified army, and what happened in Ras Jdir is the best evidence for us, and that national reconciliation be promoted on the basis of tolerance, fairness and reparation.
The people of Shahat registered their objection to Aguila Saleh’s decision to impose a tax on the exchange rate, saying: “We register our objection to the decision issued by the Speaker of the House of Representatives regarding reducing the value of the Libyan dinar against foreign currency due to its negative impact on the Libyans, and we demand that fuel subsidies not be lifted.”
