American Atlantic Council: Bathley’s resignation shows the failure of the political transition process in Libya

The American Atlantic Council confirmed that the resignation of the UN envoy Abdullah Bathily shows the failure of the political transition process in Libya, adding that the motivation behind his resignation is the inability of the United Nations to successfully support the political transition process, which it was trying to strengthen in Libya.

The Council confirmed, in its report, that the various political actors in Libya are unwilling to put the collective interest above their personal interests, noting that Bathily’s resignation shows the slim prospects for United Nations initiatives in Libya, as long as national leaders remain unwilling to cooperate.

The report pointed out that Libya’s leaders are not prepared to give up their areas of authority by starting an unpredictable transition to elections that could undermine the status quo.

It explained that the next UN envoy will not be able to resolve the long-standing political impasse in Libya, as long as the faction leaders remain unwilling to participate meaningfully in UN initiatives.
