Anti-Corruption Convention: An attempt to smuggle 26 tons of gold reveals officials’ fraud in export decisions

Khairy Al-Shaibani, a member of the government expert team to implement the Anti-Corruption Convention, said that the case of an attempt to smuggle 26 tons of gold in Misrata reveals the truth of an attempt to exploit the powers of some officials in Libya to circumvent previous decisions related to re-exporting gold.

Al-Shaibani confirmed, in statements to France 24 satellite channel, that this is not a case of gold smuggling, but rather a case of deliberate damage to the national economy by some officials, noting that the case began with information to the General Prosecutor indicating that large quantities of raw gold were smuggled to Turkey, but the case revealed fraud. Officials in implementing government decisions regulating the gold export process.

He pointed out that the law allows the export of broken gold, with the approval of the Customs Committee and the Ministry of Economy, but with the collusion of officials, the law is circumvented by exporting raw gold, pointing out that all those who are now in power and struggling to remain in power are responsible for the spread of all this corruption. The politician.

He explained that combating corruption requires political will, which is completely absent from those currently in power because they only want what guarantees their survival in power, pointing out that the only body that does not currently suffer from division is the Office of the General Prosecutor. Otherwise, there is widespread non-enforcement. The law, lack of transparency, and lack of responsibility are all fertile ground for corruption.

He explained that the divided executive authority is now competing to prove its presence by building bridges and some roads, leaving the Libyan citizen suffering in the clutches of corruption, adding, “The state suffers from fragility that makes it unable to combat corruption due to the political division.”

He added that Libya is full of gold mines and has become a major transit country for gold smugglers, and the areas of southern Libya are where illegal mining operations are widespread, adding that the only way to enforce the law is to unite the Libyans in one government that supervises the holding of elections and ensuring the stability of the country.

He continued that unjust foreign interference is a major cause of instability, and as long as Libyan politicians continue to make pilgrimages to European countries to take orders from them, we will continue to revolve in the same circle, noting that there are desperate attempts by the international community to extend the Libyan crisis.

He concluded by saying, “If changing the government and overthrowing Dabaiba is the goal of the House of Representatives and the state only, then it is merely a trick to keep them in power, because if they wanted to hold elections, they would have held them now.”
